Ah, Mothering Sunday. The day when children across the country celebrate their wonderful mums and everything they’ve done for them. But what about the fantastic mothers of the stage? Musical theatre has given us some truly unforgettable maternal figures, women who sacrifice everything for their children, offer guidance when it’s needed most, or simply radiate unstoppable “mum energy”.

With several brilliant shows currently lighting up the West End, here are some of the greatest mothers in musical theatre you can see on  the London stage right now:

7) Jenny Elliot - Billy Elliot the Musical

Billy’s mum may not be physically present throughout the show, but Jenny Elliot remains one of the most important mothers in musical theatre. Her love for Billy echoes through the story, particularly in the heartbreaking letter she leaves for him. Encouraging him to follow his passion - even after she’s gone - Jenny’s belief in her son becomes the emotional backbone of the entire musical.

6) Hermione Granger – Harry Potter and the Cursed Child

Audiences first met Hermione as the brightest witch of her generation, but in Harry Potter and the Cursed Child she’s all grown-up with a daughter of her own. Watching her guide her son Rose while navigating friendship, responsibility, and the complexities of adulthood shows just how much she’s grown. Fiercely protective yet endlessly supportive, Hermione proves she’s just as formidable as a parent as she was at Hogwarts.

5) Miss Honey – Matilda The Musical

Not every great mum is biological. Miss Honey begins as Matilda’s gentle, compassionate teacher, offering the kindness and encouragement the young girl never receives at home. By the end of the show she adopts Matilda, giving her the loving family she deserves. Her quiet bravery and warmth make her one of musical theatre’s most touching maternal figures.

4) Celine Dion – Titanique

Is she technically anyone’s mother in the show? No. But in Titanique, Celine Dion delivers MOTHER energy. Narrating the Titanic story through her own catalogue of hits, this diva commands the room with outrageous humour and powerhouse vocals. She’s the ultimate camp matriarch of the ship - and audiences wouldn’t have it any other way.

3) Fantine – Les Misérables

Few mothers in musical theatre suffer as much as Fantine. After being abandoned with a child to support, she sacrifices everything to ensure little Cosette survives - her job, her dignity, and ultimately her life. Even as she sings the iconic “I Dreamed a Dream”, her thoughts are never far from her daughter. It’s that fierce devotion that makes Fantine one of theatre’s most tragic yet beloved mums.

2) Kim – Miss Saigon

Another heartbreaking heroine, Kim represents the ultimate act of maternal sacrifice. Left to raise her son Tam alone in the aftermath of war, she spends years protecting him and dreaming of a better life for him. When the moment comes, she makes an unimaginable choice to secure his future - cementing her place as one of musical theatre’s most powerful mothers.

1) Donna Sheridan – MAMMA MIA!

Taking the top spot is the unstoppable Donna Sheridan from MAMMA MIA! - a single mum who raised Sophie on a Greek island while running a hotel and belting out ABBA classics along the way. Donna is independent, hilarious, fiercely loving, and always ready with a song when life gets messy. Her bond with Sophie lies at the heart of the show, reminding us that sometimes the best mums are the ones who figure things out as they go along.

Whether they’re tragic heroines, supportive teachers, powerhouse divas, or free-spirited single parents, these women show just how many forms motherhood can take on stage.

Happy Mothering Sunday to all the amazing mums, both in the audience and under the spotlight.
